In 2016, Weatherford ISD broke ground on the new Shirley Hall Middle School on the day the school’s namesake would have turned 99. After 50 years serving the WISD community, the school decided it was time for something new. Although aging infrastructure and conditions made salvaging any of the old school impossible, new design concepts kept community members and administrators excited for the future. The concept was to divide the building up into a series of “neighborhoods,” one for each grade level. Each neighborhood comprises conventional classrooms, student collaboration zones, outdoor learning courtyard spaces, and a shared teacher work area. To develop planting, irrigation, and hardscape plans for the entire campus, with a particular focus on the outdoor learning courtyards, WISD hired civil engineering firm Pacheco Koch the Shirley Hall Middle School project.
