As the City of Melissa continues to grow, so does its investment in developing spaces for community recreation
Providing opportunities for public recreation is an investment in our communities. The City of Melissa understood this when they set aside 100 acres for a community sports park. Working with the 4B Board, Parks Board, youth sports organization, local school districts, and other community stakeholders, the design team developed the programming and design for the 100-acre sports park. This sports park will be anchored by a community center located in the heart of the facility. As a destination, it will welcome users from around the community. Located beyond the current city infrastructure, the design team collaborated to tackle challenges of water and waste water treatment, stormwater management, and other utility requirements.
Taking advantage of natural opportunities, the team implemented a system to harvest site drainage and collect it in a pond. This will provide irrigation to the site and augments the existing stock pond, turning it into a true amenity. While being implemented in phases, at complete build-out the park will provide play and practice facilities for all of the Melissa youth sports organizations. These facilities include lit practice and play fields for soccer and football, a baseball five-plex, a baseball four-plex, and a softball four-plex. Other uses such as trails, an amphitheater, and frisbee golf will provide additional recreational opportunities.
By investing in public recreation facilities, the City of Melissa is literally investing in the future of their community. That is a responsibility Pachedo Koch takes seriously as designers – to provide a return on that investment for years to come.
